1. Legal Advisor

Main Duties & Responsibilities:


Under the direct supervision of the Project Co-ordinator, the Legal Advisor undertakes the following duties and responsibilities:

• Regularly monitor entry points to identify the presence of persons of concern to UNHCR who may be denied access to territory and/or to available asylum procedures, report to UNHCR, and intervene as necessary;
• Conduct pre-screening interviews for assessing international protection needs and possible vulnerabilities;
• Provide information, advice and guidance to refugees and asylum-seekers, manage individual protection cases;
• Assist in promoting the development and strengthening of the necessary legal, policy and administrative framework for the protection of refugees;
• Map out individuals and groups with specific protection needs;
• Conduct assessments of protection risks and required responses employing age, gender and diversity (AGD) tools;
• Provide information and social analysis of the cultural, political and economic context;
• Manage individual case files in full compliance with the applicable Standard Operating Procedures and full respect for confidentiality.


Qualifications, Skills & Criteria:


• Education: University degree in Law.
• Experience: At least three years’ post-qualification experience of court advocacy, at least one year previous job experience related to refugees and asylum-seekers, or in the human rights field; experience in case management and counselling; demonstrated abilities in cross-cultural communication.
• Language: Excellent command of Turkish and English languages; knowledge of an additional language is an asset.
• Other Qualifications: Registered as a practising Lawyer with the Bar Association in North Cyprus; analytical skills; writing/drafting skills; negotiating skills; presentation skills; good computer skills.
